Fall Capsule for Home

For the past few weeks, fashion influencers have been sharing their fall "Capsule Wardrobes." What is a capsule wardrobe? Stitchfix describes it as "the building blocks of your closet that support the foundation of your personal style." Keywords - building blocks, foundation, personal style! Looks change every season, but your foundation is always there guiding the way.

Why don't we apply this thinking to seasonal decorating in our homes? With the official first day of fall right around the corner, I'm working on a seasonal refresh that will take me into early December by sticking with the classics...and there isn't a single pumpkin spice anything on the list! So, here's my version of a Fall Capsule Wardrobe for Home!

Fall is a celebration of the senses! This year, instead of fall fragrances that can be overly sweet smelling, opt for scents with citrus and spices. Trapp Candle's "Sexy Cinnamon" is a classic. Aesop's Resurrection Hand Soap smells wonderful and I love how the amber colored bottle looks on the counter. You can easily put together your own jar of mulling spices to simmer just by visiting the spice aisle at the grocery store or you can mix Williams Sonoma's Mulling Spices with cider for the perfect fall/holiday kitchen fragrance.

Instead of purchasing home accessories with fall themed motifs, invest in some neutral pieces that look great in your home all year like this cozy Italian herringbone throw in "Dune" from Lands Downunder. You can also find loads of botanical prints on Etsy to introduce some seasonal artwork without the "kitsch." Most are well under $20 and can be ordered in a variety of sizes which fit standard frames from craft stores. I love this French vegetable garden print or this series of autumn vegetables framed and propped up on the kitchen counter.

Speaking of the kitchen, we are entering the long season of slow cooked meals and savory dishes. So many of these dishes start with what my favorite chef, Ina Garten, calls "good olive oil." Cleveland friends....do you know about Domus Pacis Olive Oils? They are produced in Puglia, Italy and distributed exclusively by Italian Tours by Diana in Rocky River. Shipping available. A must for a kitchen capsule wardrobe!

For your autumn home bar and entertaining, skip the pumpkin themed paper goods and opt for classic patterns like Caspari's "Dress Stewart Tartan" or "Faux Bois Birch" napkins. These styles will take you all the way through the holidays and into January. And who doesn't love a good plaid?

And finally, we must include some ideas for our homes' exterior! Check out this site for some wonderful fall/winter planting ideas with unique colors that are sure to brighten your front porch. I opt for winter pansies, ornamental cabbages and branches to fill my pots. Mums fade so quickly, but pansies and cabbages are made for cold weather. In fact, the colors of the cabbage become more vibrant as the temperatures drop!

You can find these Fall Capsule Wardrobe for Home items in a variety of price points. Whether the item will be around in your home for many seasons to come or easily consumed by season's end, you will have the foundational pieces that can be adapted all year round!
